24 Roehampton Street

by Cross Wires

/

about

Back in September 2020 Cross Wires played a livestream gig at the Hotbox venue in Chelmsford, Essex. 2 new songs were debuted on the night (of which this was one) Producer Rory Attwell took those skeletal live recordings and with some studio wizardry turned them in to 2 fully formed tracks.all vocals were rerecorded by Cross Wires singer Jonathan Chapman in the studio.

24 Roehampton Street tells the story of a couple living out the last moments of their lives during an apocalyptic event.

Inspired by 80s Nuclear War films Threads and When The Wind Blows and the Civil Defence Information series Protect and Survive.

lyrics

So here we are now
We built a Life here
So many memories come rushing back
Before working late replaced romance
All the meals we shared at this table
we now shelter underneath

I was the drowning man
A hollow man
Waiting for the end
Eating time

Who’s that old man in the mirror?
It’s headfirst now in to the abyss
I can see now I let things slide
I didn’t always treat you right
It’s always seems that we’ve got forever
Now we are standing on the edge waiting to jump
I boarded up the windows put a mattress against the door.

I was the drowning man.
A hollow man
Waiting for the end.
Eating time.

(Maybe I’ve bought us enough time. To finish this bottle of wine)

All the slammed doors and nights spent on the sofa over arguments about nothing in particular it all seems so pointless now.
It’s funny how time gets away from you without even noticing.
You turn around one day and you don’t recognise yourself. I forgot how beautiful you are.

I was the drowning man.
A hollow man
Waiting for the end.
Eating time.
